A new message from Budapest before the Romanian elections

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Monday, referring to relations with Romania, that the Hungarian government is always pursuing the best possible cooperation with a country in which a huge Hungarian ethnic community lives, because the last years have shown for everyone that when Hungary and a neighboring country is best for Haghiarii.

« So it is natural that when in a neighboring country there are presidential elections, we will respect them, » the head of Hungarian diplomacy added at his Monday press conference, commenting recent remarks of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on the presidential elections in Romania.

Szijjarto asked what the prime minister should have declared in the current situation. ‘That we will not cooperate with the next president of Romania? Is that so? Does anyone even consider this that this should have said and that should be the foreign policy of the government? ‘, The MTI said.

In statements made on Friday, at the inauguration of a pilgrimage house in Tihaly, in western Hungary, Viktor Orban quoted the Romanian presidential candidate George Simon with the assertion that ‘the time has come for a Europe, a Christian Europe’, the Hungarian Prime Minister declaring that ‘we are in full agreement’.

Orban also said in Tihany that the Hungarians and Romanians have a common fate. « We will not mix in the struggles in the presidential elections in progress now in Romania, but (…) We assure the Romanian people and its future president that we support cooperation and we will not support any attempt to isolate or political revenge against Romania or its leaders, » he said, according to the MTI.

In his press conference on Monday, the Hungarian Foreign Minister noted that the Budapest government will not accept any diminution of the rights of the Hungarian ethnicity and will firmly take a position for the Hungarian ethnicity in Transylvania and the Szekler Land, regardless of who will be the negotiation partner.

Szijjarto added that all steps will be coordinated with the Hungarian Democratic Union in Romania (UDMR), as it represents the local Hungarian ethnic.
