A new EU debate in a new Europe

A new EU debate in a new Europe

I think it is important and right with a new EU debate now, based on today’s situation in Europe and in the world, and not what the world looked like 30 years ago.

We are in a demanding time, with a lot of uncertainty about what is happening in the future. Russia’s invasion in Ukraine three years ago created a new security policy situation, and according to NRK, Russia will increase its military presence in the north. The United States appears more and more as an unstable ally in NATO.

Norway needs to stand stronger with countries we share liberal and democratic values with. It will be wrong with our country and future generations to fail to debate our participation in the European Union- whether we are best served by becoming a member or still standing outside.

I therefore want an enlightened debate that is about the EU, Norway and the world today, where through dialogue with the EU we get clarity on what a membership will mean for Norway’s interests and security.

Now there is another seriousness about Europe we cannot push away. We need even stronger alliances and we need to get closer to the countries we have common interests with.

Not only for security policy reasons, it is right to discuss what the EU can mean for Norway. I think it is right to engage in dialogue with the EU also to find out what benefits it may be for Norway to be with the Union and of course also at what « price ».

This is precisely why it is important to start a dialogue with the EU about a Norwegian EU membership, and the Left believes a membership must be decided through a new referendum.
