A nearly 180-year-old monument was dismantled in Poltava at the site of the Russian Tsar Peter I. During the work, experts found a previously unknown engraved image of a two-headed eagle on the monument.

”In Poltava, consistent work is underway to decolonize public space and to eliminate the symbols representing Russian imperial ideology. One of these objects was a monument at the so -called recreation point of Peter I, which is an example of an imposed historical interpretation, designed to legitimize the imperial presence in Ukraine.
According to the Poltava City Council, the monument was one of the markers of Russian imperial propaganda, which formed a distorted idea of local history « – they say in the ICSK.
The department, citing local authorities, says that the dismantling of the sculpture lasted in stages and in compliance with the requirements of the current legislation and scientific and methodological recommendations. The monument was removed at the expense of patrons.
Experts in the field of architecture, restoration, history, local history and museum business took part in the dismantling.

Some elements of the monument that have artistic or historical value will be deposited with the Museum of the Poltava Battle.
On the site of the dismantled monument in the historic center of the city plan to install a new object. According to the secretary of the city council Kateryna Yamshchikova, the architectural competition will be held for this purpose.
