A medieval settlement discovered during the construction of the S17 road
The discovered monuments can come from the time before the first written mention of Łabunia, which appeared only in documents from 1428. This suggests that the remains older than previously known sources were found – perhaps the oldest traces of settlement in this part of the region. « This find can change the perception of the history of the Zamość region, » says the portal Lublin112.pl, reporting the progress of work.
Zamość. An unusual discovery during the construction of a new road
In the autumn of 2024, before the proper construction works on the S17 Piaski -Hrebenne route started, between the « Zamość Wschód » and « Zamość Południe » nodes, comprehensive archaeological research began. This area is located in the Valley of the Łabuńki River and has been protected with conservation protection for years as the AZP 90-89/9-8 archaeological position.
According to the decision of the Provincial Office for the Protection of Monuments, it was necessary to carry out excavations before construction. The task was carried out by the company « Robert Prawniczak APB Thor sp. Z oo » from Gniezno, operating on behalf of the Lublin Department of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways.
A medieval settlement under a layer of soil
Initially, 110 ares were tested, but due to the growing number of finds, the excavation area was increased to almost 3 hectares. In 2024, the research was chaired by the archaeologist, MA Przemysław Szelest, and from 2025 supervision was supervised by Elżbieta Peplińska.
As many as 220 archaeological facilities have been documented so far. Among them are, among others Rectangular residential buildings with dimensions of approx. 5×6 meters, utility cavities, posting holes and an extremely well -preserved wooden well from the Middle Ages.
Among the finds they dominate Fragments of ceramics from the 14th and 15th centuriesbut not only they caught the attention of researchers. Archaeologists also found Animal bones, flint tools, iron products, as well as unique everyday objects – bone pin, stone Żarno or Szydło. Such a rich set indicates a developed and permanent settlement functioning here hundreds of years ago.
