A Kremlin’s main negotiator arrives in the United States this week

An important Kremlin negotiator is expected in Washington this week to talk with US President Donald Trump’s administration, two sources familiar with the plan said. This is the highest-ranking Russian employee who will visit the United States since Moscow invaded Ukraine in 2022.

Kiril Dmitriev, the head of the Russian sovereign fund, which was appointed by President Vladimir Putin as a special investment and international economic envoy, will meet with the US Special Messenger Steve Whitkoff, said a source.

Another said Dmitriev would meet Whitkof on Wednesday.

Their meeting was reported earlier than CNN. According to television, Dmitriev and Whitkoff will have talks to strengthen relations between the two countries as they seek to end the war in Ukraine.

Trump said he was « tired » by Putin, and threatened Russian oil with high duties

« Maybe. The resistance to the US and Russia dialogue is real – led by rooted interests and old narratives, » Dmitriev said in a post in response to CNN information. « But what if the improved relationship is exactly what the world needs for lasting global security and peace? »

The White House and the US State Department did not immediately make a comment. The Russian Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Dmitriev’s journey comes at a time when Trump seeks to meet Putin soon to work to repair the damaged relationships, and follows recent telephone conversations between the two leaders, who also focused on reaching a peace agreement to Ukraine.

But as it seems, Trump is becoming increasingly impatient because of what suggests that Moscow’s delay in terms of a broader peaceful agreement on Ukraine, and states that it is « angry » to Putin, Dmitriev’s journey can also reduce tension.

Having been affected by Western sanctions for invasion of Ukraine and benefits from Trump’s comments on relations, Russia wants to return international investors to diversify its economy, mainly led by the war over the last three years.

As Dmitriev is still under US sanctions, CNN announced that the Trump administration has temporarily canceled sanctions for his visit.

Russia has the heels of the world’s largest reserves of metals used in lasers and military equipment.

Russia also wants to attract investors to help develop its Arctic region, Dmitriev said last week. Putin wants to strengthen the northern maritime trading through the Arctic Waters, as Russia displaces trade to Asia and far from Europe due to Western sanctions.

The focus on the strategic importance of the Arctic for mining, shipping and international security has increased sharply due to Trump’s repeated statements that it wants to acquire Greenland.
