The mayor of Amsterdam Femke Halsma met with a mysterious hero on Friday, March 28 in his official residence. The man, asking for anonymity, was honored with the city medal for courage.
« He is a very modest British, » said the local television station AT5 Femke Halsma. – He doesn’t want to be famous. Now he is mainly worried about the victims, he feels responsible for them – she revealed.
The mayor of Amsterdam emphasized that the tourist showed « great instinct » – he heard the noise, after which he realized that something bad had happened, and then knocked down the suspect to the ground. « He decided in a split second, for which he should be appreciated, » she added.
Peter Holla also referred to the instinctive reaction from the mysterious hero. – (This man – editor’s note) comes from a big city, where he was brought up to take care of his fellow citizens. He instinctively felt that he had to act – the officer said the AT5 station.
According to media reports, there were voices among the city’s inhabitants that he should become an « honorary Amsterdamczyk ». His actions are still echoing in social media. Were it not for the man’s attitude, not five, but many more people could fall victim to the attack.

As a result of a cutter attack, five people were injured: a 67-year-old American and a 69-year-old American, a 73-year-old from Belgium, a 19-year-old from Amsterdam and a 26-year-old Pole. As the services donated on Friday, March 28, our compatriot left the hospital, but the other victims are still in it. Their condition is stable.
The attacker, which turned out to be a 30-year-old Ukrainian citizen from the Donetsk region, first went to the hospital, where his leg was provided, and then to custody. The man is suspected of « five cases of attempted murder or murder of terrorist motives » – said the Dutch prosecutor’s office on Tuesday, April 1.
According to the police, the suspect checked in at the Amsterdam hotel the day before the attack, on Wednesday, March 26. He was to use a few knives for the assault, and the victims were accidental.
The exact motives of his attack are not yet known, but the decision to attack in broad daylight, in such a crowded place as the Dam Square, according to investigators, indicates the desire to attract attention and may indicate terrorist reasons.
After information about the citizenship of the detained, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced full cooperation with the Dutch police and emphasized that the perpetrator must be held responsible.
By court decision, the 30-year-old will remain in custody for at least two weeks. The decision regarding further proceedings in this case is to be made in mid -April. At this time, he can only contact his lawyer. The investigation is pending.
