A French citizen suspected of sending phishing messages was detained in Estonia
As part of the PHISHOFF operation on Tuesday, a 21-year-old citizen of France, who is suspected of sending thousands of phishing messages to residents of Estonia over the past few days, was detained on Tuesday evening in Tallinn, Pyhaya Prefecture reports.
According to investigators, the man arrived in Estonia on Friday last week and on the same day began a massive newsletter on behalf of various companies. Most often, he acted at night, posing as Omniva, Netflix or Courier companies. The messages contained phishing links with which the attacker tried to receive data from user bank cards.
The head of the department for the fight against cyber and economic crimes of the Pykhyan prefecture, Hannes Celt, said that soon the police began to receive statements from the victims, from whose accounts the money disappeared. “Together with partners, we quickly established when and where the suspect arrived in Estonia, and also began to block the spread of his phishing messages. On Wednesday night, he was detained red -handed, ”Celt said.
According to him, the detainee was shocked by how quickly he was calculated. “He came to Estonia, believing that he could act more effectively using local telephone numbers. However, he was mistaken. Those who come here with criminal intentions will not go unnoticed. ”
Today, the Kharya County Court granted the petition of the Pykhia prosecutor’s office to detention the suspect for two months. The court agreed with the arguments of the prosecutor's office that, remaining free, he could continue criminal activity or hide from the investigation.
The Department of Police and Border Guards (PPA) expressed gratitude to all partners who contributed to the establishment of personality and capture the suspect. As part of the PHISHOFF operation, the police continues to actively fight phishing attacks.
