A fascinating insight into his artistic world!

Norbert Kiening has been at the head of the Professional association of visual artists Schwaben-Nord and Augsburg. But during this time he never appeared there by a single show – which of course can be explained to a well -being when he has to do a lot of jurorial activity for the BBK’s exhibitions and therefore falls out as a participant, according to statutes. Now, however, he once applied himself for a show in the BBK rooms of the glass palace-and, what can you say, his application was actually positively approved. Certainly necessary regulations and curiosity can lie together.

So the boss cooks himself. And the menu card – in the form of a catalog – also contributes to Norbert Kiening as a trained book printer/graphic artist. On it there is a gear drawing, woodcut, painting and object, a total of 30 works. If you add those works that are shown in room H2 of the ground floor as loans from the Stadtsparkasse for the exhibition « New Connections », then Kiening, born in Dachau in 1959, is present with 35 work from 1998 to 2025 – a small retrospective.

An art comparison with Walter Stöhrer is ideal

It is quite remarkable: On the first floor of the glass palace, in the Noah gallery, Walter Stöhrer is currently being presented, which allows a double look at how a vehement-violent and expressive painting can enter into a valid connection with enrolled/scratched graphic drawing art. A comparison is worth it. At Stöhrer, the graphic is above all figurative; At Norbert Kiening, who studied at the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences, an abstract motif, which he himself refers to as a « scribble », as a dood of doodle and which appears in his work almost omnipresent as a bundle of beams and radiation, resembling a hatch.

This “scribble” runs like a leitmotif through Kiing’s work. Be it in the black and white drawings, be it in the woodcuts of around 20 printed sticks, be it in painting and the recently created Wildkirsch-Holz sculptures. With the aesthetically strong pencil drawings, the blurred paper pencil, the eraser and the eraser leave their delicate « Scripble » traces; The fine -motored chainsaw in the woodcuts and wooden objects; And in painting with its pastel-dry, dry clouds, above all a rich selection of spatulas. With them, Kiening processes his mall landscapes, impulsive, emphatic, impatient to slightly aggressive. As he says, he needs the resistance – and the reaction to coincidences in the design.

In this show an oeuvre is rounded

For a good 35 years, Norbert Kiening has now worked as a freelance artist- in the event of fulfilling socially tasks such as the cultural and architectural advisory board in Augsburg-, although he also profiled himself as highly sensitive outside of his own artistic work. It is now nice to look at how an oeuvre is rounded off in the BBK gallery using four different artistic disciplines. Way and goal collect together.

The exhibition runs until June 1st in the BBK gallery in the Augsburg Glass Palace. Opening times: Tue., Thu., Sat., Sun. from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
