A doctoral student from Wuhan sent four parcels with biological material to the USA
Chengxuan Han, a PhD student at the Huazhong Research and Technology University in Wuhan, was arrested during border control in the United States. She is accused of sending four shipments from China to the USA containing hidden biological material. The recipients were people associated with the Michigan University Laboratory, an institution already associated with controversial connections with China.
The Chinese doctoral student confessed to false testimonies at the airport in the USA
In the years 2024 and 2025, Han sent four packages from China, which – as she confirmed during the interrogation by the FBI and ICE HSI – contained Biological material related to nematodes. Before controlling at the US airport, officers discovered that data from its electronic device was deleted three days before arrival. In addition, Han confessed to giving false testimonies.
Prosecutor Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. He emphasized that « alleged smuggling of biological materials by a foreign from the University of Science and Technology in Wuhan (…) is part of the alarming pattern that threatens our safety. » In turn, FBI Cheyvoryea Gibson warns that the situation « is a direct threat to public and national security. »
Connections with earlier matters and threats to agriculture
Han is already a third person from China arrested within a week for an attempt to smuggle hazardous biological materials. On June 3, two scientists, Jian Yunqing and Zunyong Liu, were accused of trying to introduce a toxic fungus fusarium graininearum to the US – a pathogen that can cause serious plant diseases and is classified as a potential agrotting weapon.
The FBI determined that Jian and Liu were working on this mushroom in China, and Jian received research financing directly from the Chinese government. It is not clear, however, whether Han was in any way related to these researchers or the University of Michigan, where they both cooperated earlier.
