A difficult year for growers. What does their cultivation look like in Poland?
On four hectares of this picturesque plantation, peonies have just begun, which will last about a week. However, this year the weather conditions have firmly felt in the growers. This affected the size of the collections.
Cultivation of peonies is not only the pleasure of communing with the beauty of these flowers, but also a huge challenge. As Jan Falkowski explains, it is key to collecting flowers at the right time. – You need to break the flower at the right stage of development. Sometimes the time of lateness is enough and the flower is lost, it will not develop. In addition, this aura hinders this task. We have to shoot into the weather window and in fact every flower is stealing the weather – explains the planter. Work on the plantation is fully manual, which further increases the difficulty and requires extraordinary precision.

The collected flowers are carefully packed in cardboard containers, and then go to the cold store, where they undergo the « sleep » process at a temperature of two degrees Celsius. Thanks to this, they can be transported over long distances without losing freshness. The next day after harvesting, the peonies go to the Stock Exchange in the Netherlands, from where they are sent to florists and houses around the world.

Although most flowers go to export, some of them remain in Poland. Peonies are particularly popular as an element of wedding decorations and when tuning communion tables. Peonies are flowers that delight with their beauty, but their beauty is fleeting. After developing in a vase, you can enjoy them for just a few days. Despite this, their popularity does not weaken, and the growers, despite the difficulties, still deal with their cultivation.
– This is a heavy piece of bread, but satisfaction with the effects of work is huge – sums up Jan Falkowski. Peony harvest in birch will last a few more days, as long as the weather is good.
