60 people working in a hospital in Olsztyn had to be vaccinated
It all began with the fact that the patient began to complain of persistent leg pain. He showed no symptoms related to the respiratory system. Then his condition deteriorated violently. Currently, the man is unconscious, which complicates determining where he could get infected.
Due to the suspicion of diphtheria, medical staff and emergency team – everyone who had contact with the patient received a post -exposition vaccine, and in the case of direct contact also antibiotics. In addition, a woman who alerted an ambulance about the man’s health and was also vaccinated.
The case in Olsztyn is not isolated. Earlier, in mid-March, the diphtheria was found in Wroclaw with a 6-year-old child who returned from holidays in Zanzibar, as well as in an adult who had contact with him. In Olsztyn, however, the connection with the Wrocław case was excluded, because there the infection took place outside Poland.
