A boy infected with a dangerous parasite died

BRATISLAVA. The eleven -year -old boy, who was hospitalized at the National Institute of Children’s Diseases (NÚDCH) in Bratislava for infection, died, the spokeswoman of the Institute Dana Kamenicka informed.
« We are all very sorry, but despite the maximum efforts of doctors and all healthcare professionals of the National Institute of Child Diseases who took care of the child, the boy’s life has not been saved, » the spokeswoman said.
Doctors worked with the boy diagnosed with naegleriosis. Naegleriosis, or primary amoeba meningoencephalitis, is a rare disease of the central nervous system, the cause of which is the meňavka Naegleria fowleri (tear).
It is an organism that is commonly found in various types of freshwater environment IV soil.
From Sunday, the Regional Public Health Authority of Nové Zámky ordered a preventive to close the Vadaš swimming pool in Štúrovo, which the boy visited in early June. The reason is an epidemiological investigation in connection with the incidence of infection caused by Naegleria fowleri. It is not yet clear where the boy got infected.
The results of the swimming pool investigation should be known during the week. At the same time, public health authorities will carry out extraordinary pool water collections for the presence of Améb.
