75,000 drivers reported in a week for exceeding speed limits | Spain
Many drivers are still like to step on the accelerator and not respect the speed limits. That is at least what follows from the results of the special surveillance campaign launched by The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) Between April 7 and 13, which has focused on the points where the signals are most breached. The agents of the Civil Guard Traffic Group They set 3,527 speed control points in that week, in which they invested more than 5,100 hours of work. In the end, 1,163,126 vehicles of all classes and categories were controlled, as reported on Wednesday. Of the total controlled vehicles, 75,028 drivers (6.5%) were denounced for circulating at a speed higher than permitted, a percentage slightly higher than that registered in the last campaigns made.
According to traffic data, this high number of vehicle controls is an increase of 207,322 more controlled vehicles with respect to the latest edition of the speed control campaign carried out in July 2024.
By type of road, the highest percentage of drivers reported The controlled ones is slightly higher in vehicles that circulate on conventional roads – that of a single lane by sense of circulation – in front of the cars that do it by high concentration roads, cone highways and highways. The former represent 6.56% (33,250 sanctioned) and the latter 6.3% (39,862 denounced). As traffic has found, there has been a 1.4% increase in drivers reported on high capacity with respect to the July 2024 campaign. In addition, 1,916 drivers (2.6%) were reported on crossings – we have roads that run through populations.
Some infractions have been so serious that they have ended with the imputation of offenders as alleged perpetrators of a crime against road safety. Specifically, 11 drivers were detected when they exceeded more than 80 kilometers per hour the maximum permitted speed in interurban roads —60, in the case of urban ones -, so they were brought to court for violating article 379.1 of the Criminal Code. This collects prison sentences of three to six months or with the fine of six to twelve months or with that of work for the benefit of the community of thirty -one to ninety days, and, in any case, with the deprivation of the right to drive motor vehicles and cyclomotor for a time greater than one and up to four years.
The DGT recalled that these results must be added the controls that the different regional and local police carried out in their field of competition: “A very important collaboration since, in this way, the message of respect for the established speed limits is unified, regardless of the road through which it is circulated,” the DGT has concluded in a statement.
These data are known a day after the balance of victims was made public in The Special Easter operation, in which 26 people died in the 25 mortal accidents registered from 15.00 on Friday, April 11 until midnight from Monday 21. This figure is a dead person less than in the 2024 campaign.
