Around 550 Flemish people paid an average of 90 euros in 2024 to put the surplus of electricity from their solar panels on the grid. The small print in their variable contract caused the negative prices.

In the meantime, we all have so many solar panels that we produce more electricity on sunny days than is taken. In the wholesalers for electricity, the price for electricity drops below zero at such moments, but as an average consumer you usually do not feel that in your energy bill.
In the past weeks and months, it has been warned several times that this might change in the long term-in the Netherlands you already pay to put your surplus of solar energy on the grid. But it also happens in Flanders, according to the annual report of the Flemish Energy Regulator VREG. For many people with a variable contract, the return allowance is calculated in such a way that the price previous spring and summer fell below zero. « We were able to distinguish six contracts in which the return allowance was negative in the course of 2024, » says De Vreg.

So unfavorable
With two of those contracts, the calculation was so unfavorable that the reimbursement was even negative on their annual statement. « This has actually occurred for the 548 prosumers with these contracts, » says the annual report. “With an average profile they had to be 90.36 euros pay for their electricity injected on the net. ”
It concerns two contracts with the same supplier, although the VEG does not say which. They are contracts that date from 2022. The four other contracts with a few negative months are with one other supplier, but of those contracts the start date was only after the summer of 2024. « Within these contracts, negative return payments can still occur in 2025, » says VREG.

Vray
More than nine in ten Flemish people with solar panels have a variable contract. With an old -fashioned electricity meter you didn’t have it anyway: on sunny days the counter simply turns back, although you did pay a fixed prosumin rate. It is not easy to calculate in your contract whether you have potentially negative injection rates. For that you have to look at the indexation of the spot parameter in the calculation.
If you are one of the 548 solar panel owners with negative prices, it can be seen in your annual statement.
