4+1 tunnels antidote to traffic
Large projects that will make citizens move significantly easier within the capital and prevent the further conversion of Athens into an unmistakable city are expected to take the path of implementation.
In addition to the new subway 4 underground line 4, there are also « 4+1 urban tunnels » that are considered « keys » to Athens traffic, as they will help reduce distances and shortening travel time within the basin.
The implementation of new road interventions in Attica begins to mature at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, under the pressure of the traffic problem. The design of the projects also includes critical road tunnels, which, as highlighted in a recent workshop by the Hellenic Transportation Association (SEA), will improve travel times within the urban fabric.
From Attica Odos, Elliniko and Faliro to Aspropyrgos, road axes are prepared that will be the capital's new points of interest, as without these traffic conditions they will get worse.
The most advanced of all is the underground of Poseidon Avenue, which is being implemented in the context of the Hellenic project and is estimated to operate in 2026. At the same time, the large urban tunnel of Ilioupolis is being examined, the removal of the expansion of Kimi Avenue, which will be underground, and the underground, As part of the implementation of the triple junction of Skaramanga. The « pseudo-tunnels » of Faliro will also have a separate role on the coastal front in the next three years.
The underground of Poseidon L.
The underground project of part of Poseidon Avenue is part of the first phase of Hellenic exploitation. It foresees the complete underground of Poseidon by the Alimos – Agios Kosmas border and to the height of the Greek Marina, where it will be « raised » again. The length of the tunnel will be about 1.3 km and will include 3 lanes per traffic, as it is today. It is a very complex project because of its size and proximity to the sea. The work is at an advanced stage, as the concrete of the road tunnel is almost completed. The underground portion of Poseidon, except the unexpected, will be launched in 2026.
The extension of the regional Ymittos
Another new underground, providing for the creation of a new road axis, is on the plans of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. It concerns the expansion of Western Regional Ymittos, in the context of extensions of Attica Road. This project is of great interest as it will decompose the interconnection of the Southern -Northern Suburbs via Karea Avenue. Specifically, it is foreseen to expand the Attica Road from the height of Katechaki to Vouliagmeni Avenue through a new « urban tunnel », while Vouliagmeni will be transformed into a free avenue with uneven nodes and without traffic lights.
This tunnel will be 3 km long, with 3 lanes per traffic stream and will be without exits. It will start to « sink » at the height of Kaisariani (where today the western regional Ymittos ends) and will end up on Vouliagmeni Avenue, at the height of Agios Dimitrios and Ilioupolis, a little further south of Agios Dimitrios Metro Station. The route will go in 2-3 minutes, when today, at peak hours, it takes up to 30 minutes.
Kimi Avenue
Attica Odos, which already presents signs of saturation, is awaiting the much -discussed expansion of Kimi Avenue, which is considered the most important road project in Attica.
The project concerns the expansion of L. Kimi to the highway, through a modern 3.8 km -long -length highway (including a tunnel over 2 km). The road will join the exit of L. Kimi with the Kalftakis junction of the Athens -Lamia National Road.
This project will create a bypass road in the « difficult » part of the Attica Road and will decompose the exit of Transfiguration, which today lifts all the weight of travel to/to Kifissos Avenue.
The projects include open sections, as well as two tunnels. One underground tunnel will be about 1.25 km long, while a second tunnel, about 1.15 km long, will be constructed by the Cut & Cover method (excavation and review). It is recalled that the competition has been blocked after an appeal by the Municipality of Heraklion Attica to the CoE.
Aspropyrgos' twins' ghosts'
Many have seen them, even more waiting for them… 20 years ago and some have explored them. But no one has used them for the purpose they were made. The reason for the unfinished « twin » tunnels located in Skaramanga, right next to the Sacred Road and about 400 meters from Lake Koumoundourou.
Now that the plan for the triple hub of Skaramanga is « deforing », the two Aspropyrgos tunnels are expected to make a decisive contribution to the connection of the Western regional Aigaleo with the Athens -Corinth EO. The competition for the triple junction of Skaramanga is estimated to be in the air in 2025, and with the completion of the project the operation of the ghost tunnels will also be activated.
The project concerns the completion of the last 1.5 kilometers of the Western Regional Aigaleo (which essentially functions as an extension of the Attica Odos), so that the latter is connected to the Athens -Corinth EO with the construction of the Skaramaga Skaramaga Skarab.
The 'pseudo-dyeing' in Faliro
In the area of Faliro, two « pseudo-dumplings » have already been built. In the first phase of the works of the regeneration of the Faliro Bowl, in the place of Poseidon's Free Avenue, two terrestrial sequential tunnels were created in the section between the SEF and the contribution of Poseidon with L. Syngrou.
Today these tunnels seem to have no use. But in the integrated form of intervention above them, a large 240 -acre coastal park will be created. In the new coastal park, the two tunnels will… serve the smooth connection of Esplanada with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, creating a single leisure area with the Flisvos area that will start from the SEF and ending in Paleo Faliro.
The second phase of the project will be implemented by the Attica Region within the next three years, as the competition is at the forefront, funded by the NSRF 2021-2027.
