300,000 Danes have received important SMS: They must respond now

According to a YouGov study done with Alm. Fire from last year shows that despite the fact that the weather has become more violent and part of housing in Denmark is at high risk of flooding, as much as 71 per cent. of the Danish homeowners did not make climate protection of the home.

Billion bill to society

Since 2011, cloudbursts, storm rivers and other climate -related incidents have cost society over DKK 19 billion, figures from, among others, the industry organization Forsikring & Pension and the Nature Damage Council show.

In 2023 alone, the damage rose to more than three billion.

Despite the development, many Danes stand without a plan when the water falls in. A study from last year shows that every third Dane has doubts about how best to prevent weather damage.

« It is a serious problem. We know from experience that the sooner you intervene, the less the damage becomes. But many respond only when the damage has happened, which can quickly become very expensive and potentially mean that you have to do without your home for a period of time, » says Jan Graversgaard.

Concrete advice on SMS

In response to the development, Alm. Brand launched a digital prevention universe with specific advice and tools to secure the home against cloudbursts and other extreme weather.

At the same time, the company upgrades its SMS alerts to about 300,000 customers, so that those in vulnerable areas receive both warnings and specific advice before the storm strikes.

« We want to help customers with specific advice on what you can do here and now, and in the long term create Denmark’s best platform for weather damage prevention for the Danes, » says Jan Graversgaard.

You can do that before the rain hits:

  • Clean drain, gutters and drainage pipes. Also, check if the drainage and run-in wells have been stopped by leaves.

  • If necessary, use water protection tape at doors and windows. If water comes, the tape swells so that the water cannot penetrate.

  • If you have not mounted a high -water shutter, you can put plastic and a heavy sandbag over your floor drains and toilet to limit ascending sewage. You can also advantageously mount a water protection plug in the floor drain to avoid ascending sewage.

If the damage has happened and the water has penetrated your home, there are still a number of things you can do:

  • Prioritize the things that cannot be replaced, such as images, important papers or art.

  • Wear rubber boots and gloves as you move in the water. If the water comes from below, the rainwater can often be mixed with sewage. It can make you sick if, for example, the water comes into contact with a rift on the skin.

  • Be sure to pump the water away and remove the moisture using a dehumidifier. Remember to close the windows when the dehumidifier is running. Do not turn up the heat. It sets off the bacterial growth extra and promotes mold growth in wet building elements.

  • Remember to save all receipts for material purchases and craftsman assistance, and do not throw away broken things until you have talked to us. Take pictures or movie the things that have been destroyed.
