30 years since the largest aviation catastrophe in Romania


Today, there are 30 from the largest aviation catastrophe in Romania. 60 people died after a Tarom aircraft flying on the Bucharest-Brussels route collapsed near the Otopeni International Airport, on a field within the radius of Baloteşti.

From the Commission of Inquiry, empowered to investigate the causes of the catastrophe, representatives of the Ministry of Transport, bodies of the Prosecutor’s Office, the Ministry of Interior, the Medical-Legal Institute, Belgian specialists and representatives of the manufacturers of the plane from France. The investigation was coordinated by Sorin Stoicescu, at that time the chief state inspector for the Civil Aviation in Romania, within the Ministry of Transport. A team of FBI investigators, led by agent David Beisner, carried out their own investigation, to analyze the possibility of a possible bomb terrorist attack, a hypothesis later.

The final report on the plane accident was made public on March 31, 2014, by the Center for Investigation and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety. The document states that it does not establish culprits, but only the causes of the tragedy, according to Aias.gov.ro. According to the report, the factors that led to the accident occurred were three: the asymmetric traction of the engines, the possible inability of the commander pilot and the fact that they were not taken by the co -pilot « sufficient corrective measures to cover the consequences of the first factors ».
