25 children were given space but the kindergarten remains closed

Construction should be completed at the end of the summer at the Grandaborg kindergarten in the western town of Reykjavik. However, delays have been on construction and is now aiming to reopen the kindergarten in December. 25 children had already been allocated kindergarten space in Grandaborg next fall.

The City of Reykjavik says delays have been due to unmanageable causes, but the main contractor of the project was in operational difficulties and the project unexpectedly stopped. The City of Reykjavik has worked on contracts with the subcontractors who have been involved in the construction.

In a letter from the city received by mbl.is, a solution will be found for the 25 children who had been given space in the nursery next fall. Hjördís Ruth Sigurjónsdóttir, information officer at the City of Reykjavik, says in a conversation with mbl.is that it is not possible to say where the children will be sent. It is personal and will be decided in consultation with the parents.

This is how construction looks at this moment.

Preschool closed for three years

Grandaborg was closed on October 1, 2022, and repairs began 18 months later or in April 2023. The kindergarten was closed because sewage under the house broke apart and pollution was detected in the soil.

Parents of children received information letters when the kindergarten was closed in 2022 and stated that it was necessary to remove all the soil and see if pollution could possibly be transmitted to the building’s ventilation system.

The city’s letter stated that there was a lot of illness of the preschool staff and that the first evidence of bad inspiration was revealed in the summer of 2021. The children who were in kindergarten at this time were sent in three places; at adventure cities on Nauthólsveg, in the mall and in adventure cities on Eggertsgata.

Also, the Hagaborg kindergarten is closed this fall. Five kindergartens out of seven will be operated this winter in the West Bank.
