24th failure to constitute legislature

The 24th attempt to constitute the Assembly of Kosovo has failed again, and for the 16th time the quorum was missing for the formation of the Electoral Commission that would enable the secret voting of the new Presidency. The hearing held on May 31 was interrupted and postponed for June 2.

The blocking of the process has led to fierce political clashes between the parties, with the opposition demanding that the Vetevendosje Movement renounce the insistence on secret ballot.

« Unfortunately, because of Kurti’s political stubbornness and trying to legitimize political pressure as a tool, we have remained in place. Today we are in an artificial political stalemate. We call for reflection, » said PDK Vice President Vlora Citaku.

The Chairman of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), Ramush Haradinaj, expressed concern about the institutional blocking: « Without a constituent assembly, the proceedings cannot go and no laws can be adopted. We are still waiting for the decision of the Constitutional Court and hope for a solution.

Meanwhile, the Vetevendosje Movement remains awaiting interpretation by the Constitutional Court, which has been called to give an opinion on the legitimacy of transition from open to secret voting for the Speaker of Parliament.

The first constituent session of this legislature began on April 15, but after more than a month, the Kosovo Assembly has not yet managed to form the Presidency and begin legislative work. The political crisis is lasting and uncertainty remains high.
