240 people in Belgium are protected by mobile stalking alarm: « too little »

Currently, 240 people in our country are protected by a mobile stalking alarm (MSA). This is according to figures that MP Funda ORU (Vooruit) requested from the Minister of Equal Opportunities Rob Beenders (Vooruit). That writes the importance of Limburg Monday. « If you take into account how often stalking and serious partner violence occurs, 240 alarms are very little, » says expert Anne Groenen of Hogeschool UCLL. This year, nine women in Belgium have already been killed by their (former) partner.

In the event of a threat, the police can be notified with that button, which immediately receives the correct information about the situation. Since 2024, the mobile stalking alarm has been rolled out all over the country. The Institute for the Equality of Women and Men (IGVM) has been following it since the start.
« The decision to grant a mobile stalking alarm lies with the public prosecutor’s office, » says Minister Beenders. « That is done on the basis of estimating the risks. »
