23-year-old Gaja miraculously avoided death. It started with a headache
It was a syndrome that worried a young student. The girl returned by train from Wrocław, where she studies the art of media. « The headache was unbearable, I took a painkiller, I thought it would pass, » says Gaja Wych. – My mother had to pick me up from the train. I got to the hospital, a tomograph was made, I got medicine and I was discharged home.
Gaja lost consciousness, got an epilepsy attack. The diagnosis was shocking
The headache gave way, but the hand began to numb and refuse to obey. She was hospitalized again. There she lost consciousness, got an epilepsy attack. It was dangerous. The parents broke down when the doctors said that the entire right hemisphere of the brain was in thrombosis. Cieszyn Medics could not help anymore. Fortunately, at the Upper Silesian Medical Center in Katowice – Ochojiec got hope for a normal life.
– I was transported by an ambulance to Ochojiec. I don’t remember much, unless I almost died – adds Gaja. – After the procedure, I regained consciousness only after three days, it was ICU and 3 weeks of recovery. Today I am very happy and I am happy with my life again.
To save the student’s life, doctors from Ochojiec had to do thrombectomy
It turned out that the young student has a serious ailment, venous sinus thrombosis, complicated with the brain stroke. To save it, doctors had to perform immediate mechanical thrombectomy. The operation made by Dr. Łukasz Binek, The treatment neurologist was full of success. Such a procedure involves mechanical removal of thrombotic material from the cerebral veins to restore normal blood flow. Everything succeeded, the student regained consciousness. A few days later, all symptoms, paresis, headache, epilepsy and awareness disorders gave way.
Venous stroke is a rare disease. Do not underestimate the headaches
– venous stroke is a very rare disease, which is only 1% of all strokes. It usually affects young people. It is manifested by a severe headache, disorders of consciousness, seizures of epilepsy – says prof. Anetta Lasek-Bal, head of the Neurology Clinic at GCM Katowice-Ochojcu.
Currently, Gaja undergoes rehabilitation, which is to help completely regain the efficiency of the hand. The story of the girl is proof that thanks to progress in diagnostics and treatment, even such rare and dangerous cases as a venous stroke of the brain, they can have a successful ending. It is also a message for patients not to ignore alarming headache symptoms.
