This week it will remain sunny and dry with temperatures up to 18 degrees by next weekend. But if you feel itching to get started in the garden, keep in mind that it is still freezing at night. Frost -sensitive plants risk freezing to freeze.

Apart from here and there some fog and low clouds in the early morning, it usually gets sunny this week. With temperatures that rise a little every day. Wednesday we get 14 to 15 degrees, says weatherman David Dehenauw of the RMI. “Thursday and Friday that goes to 15 to 16 degrees, on Saturday we may even reach 17 to 18 degrees locally. Only on Sunday afternoon or evening is there a chance of a little drop, until then it stays dry. ”

« Next week it will be a lot less beautiful, by the middle of next week the mercury will again drop to 9 to 11 degrees, which are normal averages for the time of the year. »

Garden jitters

Because of the nice weather it starts to itch with many to tackle the garden after the winter. Yet our garden expert Marc Verachtert warns not to plant frost -sensitive plants, because it can still freeze at night. « That is certainly the case today and tomorrow, » says David Dehenauw. « And also in the mid -next week, the mercury can flirt again at night with the freezing point. »

“And not all young plants can stand that. Leave the winter covering a bit on plants that cannot stand the freezing cold so well. Or you can remove them during the day, but put them back in the evening. The vegetable garden also lets you rest for another week or two, « says Verachterert.

If you want to work in the garden anyway, wait until it is warmed up and the ice layer has melted. Certainly when planting, it is better not to make it through the ice layer.

In many garden centers they already sell outdoor plants that are in bloom, such as hydrangeas. That is tempting to have some color in the garden or on the terrace after the winter. « Wait with that, » recommends Marc Verachterert. “They end up from the warm conservatory in the Vrieskou. Chances are they won't make it. Changing plants that do not yet have flowers or leaves can now be planted. ”
