17 EU countries condemn Hungary’s attempts to ban pride / day

Recent changes in Hungarian law violates the basic rights of LGTBIQ+ persons, stated in a statement signed by Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

In March, the Hungarian Parliament adopted a bill prohibiting Pride. In accordance with this bill, the organization or attendance of events that violates the controversial Hungarian Child Protection Act, which prohibits the display or promotion of homosexuality to minors under the age of 18, will be considered.

Up to 200,000 Hungarian forint (approximately EUR 500) are expected to attend prohibited events, and authorities will be able to use facial recognition software in the future to identify the participants of the prohibited activities.

In April, the Hungarian Parliament recorded a state constitution that a person could only be defined as a man or a woman.

« We are concerned about the impact of these measures on freedom of expression, the right to peaceful gathering and the right to privacy, » said a joint statement of 17 EU countries. They urged Hungary to review these legislation and called on the European Commission (EC) to address Hungary on this issue.
