At noon on Sunday, May 18, the solemn Mass inaugurating the pontificate of Pope Leon XIV. Robert Prevost, elected on the conclave of May 8, thus became the first pope from the United States in history.

150 thousand people at a mass inaugurating the pontificate of Leon XIV
About 150,000 participated in the Holy Mass. people. There were 156 official delegations with presidents, premieres, representatives of the monarchy and other denominations and religions, including President of Ukraine Volodymir Zelnski, President of Israel Jicchak Herzog, chairwoman of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen or King Belgium Filip and King of Spain Filip VI.
During the mass, the new bishop of Rome received Palius and Fisherman’s ringi.e. insignia symbolizing the relationship with the apostle Piotr and the mission of managing the Church. During this ceremony, Leon XIV was clearly touched.
« I was elected without any merits, » said the Pope in his homily, addressing thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square. « I come to you as a brother with fear and trembling, » he said, pointing to love and unity as the center of his Peter’s ministry.
A prayer was read in Polish during the mass
Leon XIV also referred to the death of Pope Francis, emphasizing that the Church on these days was experiencing mourning in the light of Easter and the belief that the resurrected Christ did not leave her people. He emphasized that he wanted to be a « servant of faith and joy » of the faithful, following the path of love and unity.
During the mass inaugurating the pontificate of Leon XIV, there was a Polish accent – secular Jakub Horbacz from the TerTio Millennio Institute read in Polish a prayer for the poor and suffering. « Almighty God, through his Providence, give them a lot of refreshment, comfort and hope, also through the merciful love of the brothers, » he sounded in St. Peter’s Square.
After the mass, the Pope is to greet foreign delegations in the Basilica of Saint Peter, among them the leaders of the state.
