100th Anniversary of Birthday to Icelandic Chessmen


On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Chess Association of Iceland, the company is looking back in its roots and holds the Icelandic tournament in chess in Blönduós, the foundation of the company.

Also, it is possible to make almost all versions of the magazine chess available inside of timarit.is. This is stated by Gunnar Björnsson, president of the Chess Federation, in a conversation with mbl.is.

The magazine Skák has been published for almost 70 years and is the purpose of explaining the main thing in Icelandic chess. It also contains puzzles, chess historical articles and chess notes.

Gunnar says that the magazine is intended to be authorized for chess history for the future and the joy that the magazine will be available at timarit.is – « a kind of gift from the company to Icelandic chessmen ».

Icelandic tournament in chess 15-21. June

The Icelandic tournament in chess will be held at Blönduós 15-21. June and almost all of the country’s strongest chess players will compete for the Icelandic Championship title in chess.

Foreign guests will also be raised and can be mentioned in the category of Bosnian-Dutch Grand Master Ivan Solokov, who is known within the chess community.

At the end of the last round of the tournament, Saturday, June 21, the SÍ’s birthday party takes place with a festive dinner.

It is planned that the tournament will be held at Blönduós where the Chess Association of Iceland was founded 100 years ago.

The next day, a speed chess tournament will be held under the name Blönduós Blitz. Gunnar expects the tournament to be strong and that well -known foreign chess players will participate.

The Chess Association of Iceland was established on June 23, 1925 in the medical home in Blönduós by six Nordic chess companies. For this reason, the Icelandic tournament will be held at Blönduós, and the municipality of Húnabyggð has requested the use of the medical home on the occasion.
